Winter Walks and SnowShoe Trails

Snowshoes can be rented in Valtournenche and Cervinia at the ski rental stores.

It is recommended to use walking sticks for Winter Walking Trails.

Plan Maison Snowshoe Trails

Two scenic snowshoe routes start from Plan Maison and offer panoramic views of the Matterhorn and surrounding Alps.

The Plan Maison → Fornet Station trail (about 4.5 km) is the shorter option, while the Plan Maison → Cime Bianche Laghi route (about 6 km) provides a longer alpine walk.

Both routes are groomed and signposted during winter and are considered safe and suitable for beginners.

Lago di Loz Snowshoe Loop

This peaceful snowshoe route circles the frozen Lago di Loz above Valtournenche, passing through quiet forest and open alpine clearings. The trail is well marked in winter and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains while remaining relatively gentle. It’s a perfect introduction to snowshoeing for visitors looking for a short and scenic outing close to the village.

Champlève Forest Snowshoe Trails

Champlève is a small winter recreation area surrounded by forest, known for its quiet snowshoe trails and cross-country skiing tracks. The routes here run through beautiful alpine woods and are usually less crowded than trails closer to the ski resort. Because the terrain is gentle and well maintained, this is one of the easiest places in the valley to try snowshoeing for the first time.

Chamois to Lago di Lod Snowshoe Walk

From the car-free alpine village of Chamois, a scenic snowshoe trail leads through open meadows to Lago di Lod, a small mountain lake surrounded by forest. The route is gentle and panoramic, offering beautiful views of the surrounding peaks and a peaceful atmosphere away from the ski resorts. Combined with lunch in the village, it makes a wonderful half-day winter excursion for non-skiers.

Lake Maen Winter Walking Trail

The Lake Maen Trail follows a scenic winter route around the frozen lake near the small hamlet of Maen. The walk is relatively gentle and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains reflected in the lake when conditions allow. It is an easy and relaxing option for visitors looking for a short winter outing close to the village.

Layet Matterhorn View Winter Walking Trail

The Layet Matterhorn View Walk is one of the most scenic short winter walks near Cervinia. The route follows a gentle path with continuous views of the Matterhorn (Monte Cervino) and the surrounding alpine landscape. Because of its panoramic setting and moderate length, it is a popular option for visitors who want to enjoy the mountains without skiing.

Crépin Wildlife Winter Walking Trail

Start point: Valtournenche village area
Distance: ~5 km
Duration: about 2 hours
Elevation gain: ~226 m

The Crépin Wildlife Walk is a scenic forest trail above Valtournenche known for its quiet atmosphere and opportunities to observe local wildlife. Along the route visitors may occasionally spot animals such as roe deer, ibex, or chamois, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The path offers a gentle climb and makes a rewarding snowshoe or winter walking route for nature lovers.

Tour of Mande: Winter Walking Trail / Snowshoe 

Start point: Salette gondola arrival (Valtournenche)
Distance: 4.5–7 km options
Duration: 2–3 hours depending on route

The Tour of Mande Trail begins at the Salette gondola station above Valtournenche and follows a panoramic route through alpine pastures and forest. Several route options allow visitors to choose shorter or longer loops, all offering beautiful views across the valley and toward the surrounding peaks. In winter the trail is suitable for snowshoeing or winter walking and provides a peaceful alternative to the nearby ski slopes.

Many of these routes are suitable for both winter walking and snowshoeing, depending on snow conditions. Local sports shops in Cervinia and Valtournenche rent snowshoes and can recommend the best trails for the day.
